At Dog Training By Aviry, we believe that knowledge is key to making informed decisions about assistance animals. Understanding the distinct roles that service dogs, therapy dogs, and emotional support animals (ESAs) play can empower you to choose the right support for your needs. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they refer to different types of assistance animals with unique purposes, training, and legal protections.
Service Dogs are specifically trained to perform tasks that directly assist individuals with disabilities. This includes guiding those who are visually impaired, alerting those who are deaf, or providing support during a medical episode. At Dog Training By Aviry, we offer Service Dog Foundation Training designed to help build the essential skills needed for a service dog. While our training focuses on developing your dog’s abilities, it’s important to note that this program will not fully train a service dog within the course timeframe. Depending on the tasks required, we may collaborate with you on additional training options.
Therapy Dogs provide comfort and emotional support to many people, often visiting hospitals, schools, and nursing homes. Unlike service dogs, therapy dogs do not have specialized training to assist individuals with disabilities. If you're interested in developing a therapy dog, we can guide you in understanding the traits and training needed for successful interactions in approved public spaces.
Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) offer companionship and comfort but do not have the same level of training as service dogs. They can help individuals feel more secure and relaxed simply through their presence. ESAs are not limited to those with mental health disorders and can provide emotional support to anyone seeking a loving companion. While they do not have the same legal protections as service dogs under the ADA, they may be recognized under the Fair Housing Act, allowing them to live with their owners in housing that otherwise prohibits pets.
Understanding these differences is crucial for anyone considering an assistance animal. Each type serves a unique purpose and can significantly enhance the quality of life for their handlers, but they do so in different ways.
At Dog Training By Aviry, we offer a variety of training packages, including Basic Obedience, Puppy Starter, Customized Behavioral Training, and Service Dog Foundation Training, tailored to help you and your dog succeed in their specific roles.
If you’re considering training a service dog, therapy dog, or ESA, it’s essential to evaluate your needs and what type of animal would best support you on your journey. Remember, all dogs are unique, and the right match can make a world of difference!
